Celebrating Three Quarters of A Century Young!

I’ve just had the good fortune to celebrate my 75th birthday and I must express that I’m in much better health than when I was 40. It hasn’t been luck that got me this far with great health and energy. I’m totally dedicated to a gluten-free lifestyle and have been since 2004. Having researched the ramifications of consuming gluten for years, like a full-time job with no pay (over the edge, I know), I fully understand how it can destroy one’s health and life.

I also try to get to the gym 3 times a week for an hour of stretching, cardio, and weights, and some walking outside in the good weather. Without this exercise and the GF diet I can’t imagine what shape I’d be in. I had done yoga for a stretch and need to get back to it. Yoga is another great mental and physical dimension to add to your routine. I love to garden and do most of it by bending from my back or on my knees. Love to sop up the sun by being outside, but try not to catch the strongest sunlight, and I don’t use chemical sunscreen. This summer I hope to get into the lake and swim on a daily basis.

I’m also dairy-free and stay away from soy. I’m trying to add more fruits and veggies to our diet and to eat as organic and whole as possible, including the good fats. It’s tough giving up cheese/dairy, but the consequences for me are a stiff body, lots of throat clearing, and postnasal drip; and I feel it in my lower back. Also I discovered that doing dairy in the middle of hay-fever season kicked on those allergies (that all disappeared once I got gluten out of my diet) almost immediately and furiously. Dairy can act a lot like gluten and probably about 50% of the folks I talk to who are gluten-free also need to be dairy-free.

How could I possibly be 75? Where ever did those years go? I don’t begin to feel my age! I’m most grateful for my family and friends and for the good health we as a family enjoy. You too can enjoy much better health if you really want to. You need to detect gluten intolerance if you are sensitive to it; then adhere to a 100% gluten-free lifestyle. About 30% of the population may be intolerant. Many lives have changed miraculously by attending to the trigger/s… the bottom-line as to what’s making you sick.

You will be amazed by the many rejuvenated GF success stories in the book and I spell out 4 blood tests you need to request or you likely won’t get enough testing to detect it. Too often they only give one test and often it is false negative. If negative the stool testing in Chapter 17 is very sensitive and picked it up in most of my family.

If my family and I hadn’t discovered this monster gluten protein we would all be in very serious disrepair and poor health with numerous issues affecting many parts of the body. By the end of the first year on the GF diet we were basically going for health checkups.

I know you expect your doctors would know about the hazards of gluten, after all many of you go to the best doctors, but little education is being put forth for mainstream medicine and you are suffering because of it.

Your health remains in your very own hands. You can continue to suffer with whatever ails you (from hangnails and dry skin to asthma and allergies to cancers and autoimmune diseases and on and on) or you can take matters into your own hands and change your life and your health. Find a new doctor if you have to (in functional medicine that looks at the cause).

By the time you get to the end of my book, Toxic Staple, you too will totally get it! It appears there’s not much that doesn’t get miles better if you remove the toxic staple and begin to heal your gut, and you will have comprehensive testing information at your fingertips (make copies to share with your doctors) to help you detect not only celiac disease, but intolerance to gluten that can be just as bad.

Something Stupid!

I have to admit I did something quite stupid recently, and I paid for it. Mind you, I would never knowingly touch a crumb of gluten. Yes, it’s that nasty for probably about 30% of the population according to some experts. Whether you have celiac disease or are gluten intolerant you should never consume this troublesome protein.

We were out for a bite of dinner and I ordered a gluten-free vegetarian pizza. When it arrived I realized I’d forgotten to ask for no dairy. The waitress was happy to get me another pizza without cheese, but I said, against my better judgement, not to bother. I managed to foolishly consume most of it.

At the gym the next morning I would say I was about 20% off my usual self. I could feel my lower back around my spine, my leg muscles talked to me, my energy wasn’t quite there, and my balance and rhythm were a bit off. I was also a bit stuffy. You might think this isn’t so bad, but with repeated indulgence of foods our body recognizes as “the bad guy” along with the # 1 “bad boy, gluten” that many of you are in sheer denial about, the inflammation that is generated may be wearing away at numerous levels of your health.

If I had intestinal ramifications from dairy I never would have let this slip. But I never should have anyway because the immune system recognizes dairy as a foreign invader, in my case, and creates antibodies to fight these antigens off. Dairy can act just like gluten in destroying the villi. (1)

Gluten can affect any part of your body in a degenerative manner, and dairy seems to be affecting about 50% of those on a GF diet that I talk to.

Add in heavy metals, dirty water and air, chemicals and plastics, and you have a toxic soup of degenerative disease and numerous ailments. At least clean up the toxins in your environment you can control before they control you!

Become your own advocate to rise above your ailments and live a longer, stronger, healthier life. Do it now before your health issues become much worse. You can do this!

Thanks at Thanksgiving…and All Year

As we approach this Thanksgiving Day and holiday season many of us think a little more about giving thanks for all that we cherish: our family and friends, our freedom, and our good health, among many others. I especially am thankful everyday for the excellent health my family and I enjoy. Had we not discovered we were all quite intolerant to gluten we would not have been such happy campers these last 12 years.

Knowing what I know about the devastating and degenerative hazards of gluten from having poured a decade into research and writing my award-winning book, “Toxic Staple” I can’t imagine what shape my family and I would be in if we hadn’t figured this monster out. I am fortunate to only be on one med for a hypothyroid that was very likely damaged due to gluten (autoimmune diseases are highly linked to gluten) before I even knew what gluten was, and I never get sick, and have great energy.

Many of you, however, do not bask in the sunlight of good health and great energy and may not realize that much of your poor state of health lies in your own hands. Most of you really can do something about your allergies, asthma, fatigue, autoimmune diseases, skin issues, neurological maladies, and on and on, if you want to. Naturally everything is not linked to gluten, but truly, it is incredible what gets better when you address this “toxic staple” that pervades our everyday lives and destroys your gut and other parts of the body.

Going downhill at the rate I was traveling prior to “the gluten-free lifestyle” in my early sixties, I can only assume that my longevity has been extended vastly, along with greater health, and rejuvenated energy and vitality.

I encourage you to look at your health and that of your children and other family members and friends. Many of you think it is normal to have intestinal issues, fatigue, allergies, asthma, arthritis, organ issues, migraines, depression, and on and on for more than over 300 maladies linked to gluten, but it is not. Older age does not necessarily have to mean degenerative, failing health. Your health and life can become so much more enhanced and transformed that you would not believe it. I am in better shape in my seventies than when I was in my forties. No kidding! All I did was remove the “monster” gluten (dairy also bothers many who are gluten intolerant). By the end of the first year I was only going for health checkups instead of sick calls.

But let me warn you that the vast majority of our traditionally trained doctors are not giving enough testing to track down celiac disease or gluten intolerance, nor are they aware of the numerous symptoms and illnesses linked to gluten. It’s not really their fault. Little is being done to educate every health care professional in every facet of medicine, since gluten can affect any part of the body, and many think celiac and gluten issues are rare. They are epidemic!

If you are plagued with chronic symptoms and illness please…do your body and brain a favor… you must become your own advocate in conjunction with your doctor. Get educated, get tested (you will need to request certain tests), and if positive follow a 100% gluten-free lifestyle. No cheating!

 And give mega thanks you have discovered the root of your health problems.

Commentary On: Your Grain-Free Diet Isn’t Good For You Or the Planet!

“Unless you have a serious health problem such as celiac disease (about 1 percent of the population) whole grains and good starches can and should be part of your diet.”

I take issue with the above quote from the Washington Post: Your Grain-Free Diet Isn’t Good For You Or the Planet by Marie Speck, Oct 30, 2015.

I would like to bring to light that in addition to the apx 1% of the population that has celiac disease about 30% may be intolerant to gluten, which means they should not consume this toxic, difficult to digest protein. That’s nearly 1/3 of our population!

Tens of millions of Americans are suffering from hundreds of symptoms, diseases, and associated conditions linked to gluten substantiated by thousands of studies from around the world. Many of them are “trying” the gluten-free diet and find they lose weight, gain energy, headaches and tummy aches disappear, skin, joint, and intestinal issues resolve, and a raft of other ailments get better when off gluten. Many think this is just another fad diet, but it isn’t.  If health issues resolve with a gluten-free lifestyle that tells me they shouldn’t be eating this toxic staple.

It’s important to get tested for celiac and gluten intolerance, but that’s another whole can of worms since too often not enough testing is given to detect the problem and patients are told they don’t have an issue with gluten and can keep eating it as they continue to suffer.

Poem: A Degenerative Conduit

Over the last several years I’ve written many poems on the hazards of gluten with hopes the reader will become motivated and empowered to really look at their symptoms and diseases and face up to the fact that they may well be linked to gluten. Ignoring them may make matters worse over time.

A Degenerative Conduit

Is The Gluten-Free Diet Just Another Fad? Absolutely Not!

The gluten-free diet has become a fad, but it is definitely not just another fad.

It’s no wonder all the gluten-free faddists feel better, lose weight, have more energy, headaches and skin problems disappear, intestinal issues subside, reflux and PMS get better, etc. My take is this: if you have chronic or troublesome health issues that get better with a gluten-free lifestyle, you are most likely gluten-sensitive to some degree. You are somewhere on the path or continuum of having a gluten problem. Of course you feel better when you remove the toxic staple, gluten.

But there is a problem just trying the gluten-free diet. I named my book Toxic Staple for a very good reason: gluten is at the root of huge illness. There are thousands of studies from around the world linking gluten to major ill health. So it’s important to get tested to see the results in black and white. It really helps one stay on the GF diet if intolerant, but to do the blood tests you need to keep eating gluten. If you just think you are a little sensitive and don’t fully comprehend the implications of being intolerant or having celiac disease, you may have the temptation to cheat. No, a little bit of gluten is not ok if you are intolerant or have celiac disease.

Gluten is a toxic protein for a huge part of the population (about 30%). It slowly whittles your health away and devastating, degenerative disease may not appear until years or decades later when your body has become quite compromised. That’s why it’s so important to get tested. Find out if this insidious monster is lurking in your closet before more serious issues manifest. If so, then face the GF lifestyle with an A+ attitude and see how your health, energy, and vitality may change. You deserve a healthier and stronger life, and your family needs you to be healthy.

Not Enough Testing!

dreamstimefree_164004Until there are mandated conferences for doctors in all facets of medicine (dream on), since gluten can affect any part of the body, you may need to become your own health-seeking advocate. You need to know the blood tests to REQUEST. All too often not enough testing is given to detect celiac disease or gluten intolerance and the patient is told she/he doesn’t have a problem, can still eat gluten, and meanwhile is still having troublesome health issues.

TOXIC STAPLE will provide testing information that will very likely detect a gluten issue if there is one. Sorry, but the one blood test often given may be negative and the patient may be quite gluten sensitive. By the time you test positive on the one blood test you most likely have full-blown celiac disease with very damaged villi and a very compromised body. Even if the panel of four blood tests is given you may still test negative, but be quite gluten intolerant.

This is when it would behoove you to read and “absorb” the stool testing information in Chapter 17. This testing saved my family, as we were all negative on the blood tests except for the baby (not old enough to test), and one grandchild with full-blown CD.

The book will empower you with the knowledge to get to the bottom of what’s ailing you or a loved one, if gluten sensitive, to find greater health, energy, and vitality just as my family and I have. It is not rocket science. It is about removing the toxic staple that is making you sick and tired, and jeopardizing your health in a myriad ways!

Everyone knows someone suffering from chronic aliments/disease whose health/life could be transformed by following a gluten-free lifestyle, if intolerant. Gluten is affecting millions of ailing folks. Thousands of scientific studies from around the world link gluten to over 300 symptoms, diseases, and associated conditions. The problem is: huge unawareness is pervasive since few, if any, conferences are being offered to educate our doctors, and many medical professionals think gluten issues are rare, which is why I poured a decade of my life into writing Toxic Staple.

Now my dedication to this well documented, award-winning book is beginning to payback as people tell me their stories. This past month three people in New London told me their arthritis was 95% better by removing gluten. One woman looked at my number plate, xgluten, and said, “Are you the woman who wrote the book? Thank you soooooo much.” Going gluten-free has transformed her life. Another woman whose candida has cleared up with a gluten-free lifestyle has realized two more benefits with time: the numbness, tingling, and sometimes pain in her fingers and hands (neuropathy) after doing heavy work have evaporated, and the weakness of her left knee muscles/ligaments have strengthened so she can now do leg exercises for an old injury. One doctor emailed that her frozen shoulder was 95% better after doing the diet for 3 weeks. Another woman told me her fatigue has turned to energy, tummy issues have resolved, and her skin is softer.

As I sit by the woodstove in the quiet of my home in the Sunapee region, the peace and beauty of the lake and evergreens open spaces in my mind to write jingles that deliver a message: Gluten is a Toxic Staple for millions. If you are plagued with fatigue and chronic health issues that are affecting your lifestyle, energy, and focus in trying to work, play, read, or write it is incumbent upon you to become your own health advocate (in conjunction with your doctor). Get educated, get tested (you need to request a panel of tests or you may not get enough testing to detect a sensitivity until your health is very compromised), and if positive begin a journey with the gluten-free lifestyle. It can be life transforming!
