“Full of Doubt” about Gluten?

I love this quote by Bertram Russell; it so applies to gluten-related issues:

“The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.”

Most of my friends fall into the intelligent group, but they are so doubtful about the mega research on gluten related-symptoms and conditions because their doctors, associated with some of the best hospitals and clinics in the country, know so little on this topic. Of course they might be doubtful.

But the research on gluten-related conditions is massive. And the stories in the book of renewed health substantiated by stunning studies pointing to the numerous hazards of consuming gluten are quite incredible. There are over 19,000 studies on over 300 symptoms and ailments. I didn’t fabricate this info.

Wheat has been the staff of life for thousands of years, but in the forties the gluten in wheat was discovered to be the root cause of celiac disease that leads to mal-absorption of vitamins and minerals by destroying the villi. This in turn can affect any part of the body on multiple levels at any age. Celiac disease appears to be on a continuum of gluten intolerance, so gluten may be whittling away at your health for decades before you become so sick and compromised that you do test positive on the one test the doctor may offer for celiac.

We all know people who are miserable and suffering with cancer, autoimmune disease, neurological, skin, and gastroenterological issues and so much more; or perhaps they are just below the surface of “healthy” with fatigue, colds, allergies, rashes, etc. I would urge you or them to look over the Table of Contents at: http://toxicstaple.com/wp-content/uploads/TS-TableOfContents.pdf; many more gluten-related issues are covered in the book.

Do You Understand Celiac Disease? Does Your Doctor?

I realized, in talking with a few people, that they did not understand what celiac disease was. Like most people they thought it was a disease you just had the misfortune to get and had no idea you could control the outcome by what you consume.

Yes, if you never consumed gluten you’d never develop celiac disease and very likely many other autoimmune diseases and diseases linked to malnutrition due to malabsorption.

To develop celiac disease: you will have one or two genes (HLA DQ2 and/or HLA DQ8), you need to be consuming gluten, and your gut biome will likely be in poor shape due to antibiotics, bad bacteria, parasites, poor diet, and/or, of course, gluten among others.

With celiac disease there is a destruction of your villi, the tiny hairs in the small intestine that absorb all the good vitamins and minerals from the good food we eat. They become flattened and shorn off like a twenty-year-old shag carpet and no longer have the absorption space up and down each side. Spread your fingers apart; there’s lots of absorption room up and down each finger; now make a fist: your villi are shot to pieces, worn down, and your body pays a huge price for not detecting intolerance to gluten sooner.

You can imagine how devastating this can be for the human body. All parts of the body need nutrition to function optimally. Just think what can happen to your eyes, brain, neurons, muscles, skin, heart, liver, blood, and on and on. Over 300 ailments, diseases, and symptoms are linked to gluten by major world research. Yet many of our doctors are not up to speed on what these maladies are or how to adequately test for intolerance to gluten.

I’ll leave it to you to read between the lines. All I can say is that my family and I (you can read my family saga in Toxic Staple), after a year on the gluten-free lifestyle, were basically going to the doctor’s office for health checkups, not sick visits. Everything that was wrong with us (including the 4 grandkids, 3 daughters, my husband and myself), and believe me there was plenty, began to clear up once gluten was removed. Most everything resolved.

If you have lingering sinus, cough, allergy, asthma, aches and pains, low energy, dull hair and weak nails, paleness, thinness or overweight, stomach issues (most any chronic issue, this is just a drop in the bucket) you need to consider that something is the root cause of your ailments. Gluten can be a huge trigger of illness. Throw in dairy too. Well over 50% of those intolerant to gluten also can’t handle dairy.

We all have choices to make. You can either eat to be sick or eat to be healthy. Your health lies in your own hands. You can become your own advocate by getting educated on the hazards of gluten and how to test for intolerance by reading Toxic Staple. As a driven grandmother I have spelled it out. I even see much of it as preventative medicine. I know that as long as I follow an absolute GF lifestyle and stay away from dairy my allergies, asthma, fatigue, dry skin, brittle nails and on and on will not return.

Can Dementia and Cognitive Decline Be Reversed?

Dietary supplements such as vitamin E, Omega-3s, curcumin, ginko biloba, coconut oil, and other vitamins and minerals basically have no dietary benefits on dementia or other cognitive problems or there is not enough data to prove it, as reported by the Center for Complementary and Integrative Health: NIH. Wait a minute!

The real problem could be this: A significant part of our population either has celiac disease or gluten intolerance and is malabsorbing to many different degrees, so it stands to reason that these supplements or even a multi-vitamin may not be well absorbed. In addition, the vitamins and minerals needed to keep your brain and neurons functioning optimally may not be absorbed from the good food we eat eventually leading to brain fog, cognitive issues, and a raft of ailments. This appears to be a no-brainer to me!

Knowing that about 80% of those with celiac (1/100) are still undiagnosed don’t you wonder what could be happening to those poor folks. I would suggest they are on their way (many already there) to the utmost of ill health: cognitive issues, organ failure, compromised pregnancies, cancers, osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases…what more is there?

And what about those who are gluten intolerant? Are they malabsorbing too? (To be addressed in another blog?)

New research exists on dementia turning around. I need to find it. Meanwhile if you have most any chronic issue, don’t take it lightly and know that many of you can do something about so much of your chronic health issues. You are in the driver’s seat.

Celebrating Three Quarters of A Century Young!

I’ve just had the good fortune to celebrate my 75th birthday and I must express that I’m in much better health than when I was 40. It hasn’t been luck that got me this far with great health and energy. I’m totally dedicated to a gluten-free lifestyle and have been since 2004. Having researched the ramifications of consuming gluten for years, like a full-time job with no pay (over the edge, I know), I fully understand how it can destroy one’s health and life.

I also try to get to the gym 3 times a week for an hour of stretching, cardio, and weights, and some walking outside in the good weather. Without this exercise and the GF diet I can’t imagine what shape I’d be in. I had done yoga for a stretch and need to get back to it. Yoga is another great mental and physical dimension to add to your routine. I love to garden and do most of it by bending from my back or on my knees. Love to sop up the sun by being outside, but try not to catch the strongest sunlight, and I don’t use chemical sunscreen. This summer I hope to get into the lake and swim on a daily basis.

I’m also dairy-free and stay away from soy. I’m trying to add more fruits and veggies to our diet and to eat as organic and whole as possible, including the good fats. It’s tough giving up cheese/dairy, but the consequences for me are a stiff body, lots of throat clearing, and postnasal drip; and I feel it in my lower back. Also I discovered that doing dairy in the middle of hay-fever season kicked on those allergies (that all disappeared once I got gluten out of my diet) almost immediately and furiously. Dairy can act a lot like gluten and probably about 50% of the folks I talk to who are gluten-free also need to be dairy-free.

How could I possibly be 75? Where ever did those years go? I don’t begin to feel my age! I’m most grateful for my family and friends and for the good health we as a family enjoy. You too can enjoy much better health if you really want to. You need to detect gluten intolerance if you are sensitive to it; then adhere to a 100% gluten-free lifestyle. About 30% of the population may be intolerant. Many lives have changed miraculously by attending to the trigger/s… the bottom-line as to what’s making you sick.

You will be amazed by the many rejuvenated GF success stories in the book and I spell out 4 blood tests you need to request or you likely won’t get enough testing to detect it. Too often they only give one test and often it is false negative. If negative the stool testing in Chapter 17 is very sensitive and picked it up in most of my family.

If my family and I hadn’t discovered this monster gluten protein we would all be in very serious disrepair and poor health with numerous issues affecting many parts of the body. By the end of the first year on the GF diet we were basically going for health checkups.

I know you expect your doctors would know about the hazards of gluten, after all many of you go to the best doctors, but little education is being put forth for mainstream medicine and you are suffering because of it.

Your health remains in your very own hands. You can continue to suffer with whatever ails you (from hangnails and dry skin to asthma and allergies to cancers and autoimmune diseases and on and on) or you can take matters into your own hands and change your life and your health. Find a new doctor if you have to (in functional medicine that looks at the cause).

By the time you get to the end of my book, Toxic Staple, you too will totally get it! It appears there’s not much that doesn’t get miles better if you remove the toxic staple and begin to heal your gut, and you will have comprehensive testing information at your fingertips (make copies to share with your doctors) to help you detect not only celiac disease, but intolerance to gluten that can be just as bad.

JUVENILE ARTHRITIS: Why Do Nearly 300,000 Children Need To Suffer From This Terrible Autoimmune Disease?

It’s because mainstream medicine has their head buried in the sand of “unawareness” (to be kind).

The bottom line of a Medscape article on New Guidelines and Recommendations pertaining to juvenile arthritis is that early exposure to antibiotics in childhood greatly increases the risk of developing juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), an autoimmune disease. It didn’t seem to matter what type of antibiotic was used. *

Antibiotics are known to wipe out the good bacteria along with the bad, and thus can contribute to an ill-functioning gut. Antibiotics seem to be handed out like candy for just about every childhood ailment.

It’s only been in the last few years that the importance of the gut biome, the condition of your gut, has been seriously recognized by a handful of forward-thinking doctors as being linked to autoimmune disease. You’ve probably heard that 70-80% of the immune system lies within the gut. So if you have a healthy gastrointestinal system you’re probably in pretty good shape, and contrary to that, if you suffer from most any chronic intestinal (or most any other) symptom/ailment you may very well have a “leaky gut.” Keep in mind that you can have full-blown celiac disease and have “no symptoms.”

Dr. Tom O’Bryan, a leading authority on gluten intolerance and celiac disease has stated in his “Betrayal Series” that if you have a healthy gut, you’ll never develop autoimmune disease. Other in-the-know doctors agree with this statement, but the group is miniscule.

Celiac disease is the only autoimmune disease with a known cause: gluten. Why is it that many autoimmune diseases get better or resolve (see stories in my book) on a gluten-free diet? Could gluten be a root cause of all autoimmune disease? Time will tell, but I expect so. There are over 80 autoimmune diseases recognized, but probably another 50-100 awaiting clarification.

When are we going to see studies on JIA (and RA and OA) and gluten? There are 1,000s of studies on celiac and gluten intolerance, but few on the link to arthritis. Yet you will find thousands of studies on drugs to “treat” and “control” arthritis and numerous other autoimmune diseases. Many folks have told me their own rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis (OA) was 95% better after eliminating gluten and allowing their gut to heal. You realize there would be a huge loss of business if everyone with arthritis jumped on a gluten-free diet.

Please, if you know of anyone (especially a child) with arthritis, kindly urge they get tested for celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Become Your Own Health Advocate and Change Your Life

WOW! The American people have strongly spoken for change in the United States with the election of Donald Trump.

You, too, can speak up for change in your own health and wellness!

Unfortunately, in too many cases, it is necessary to become an advocate for your own health. If your darling child has a milestone delay
Be leary of what the doctor might say

If crawling and walking poorly display
Gluten could be the link so don’t be blasé

If your infant doesn’t put weight on her feet
Don’t be shocked, it could be related to wheat   (osteomalacia, osteopenia)

If for her age she appears petite   (stature or failure to thrive)
This too could be linked to wheat

If his language skills seem incomplete
Another warning, it could be the wheat

If fussy… can’t sleep through the night
It’s wheat again you might indict

If her skin is pebbly, rough, and dry
The gluten-free lifestyle might apply

If diagnosed with autoimmune disease
Could be from the glutinous sleaze

If respiratory issues appear everyday
Are you getting the message I’m trying to convey?

But you can’t just ask for gluten/celiac testing or it’s likely you won’t get enough to really track down celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Parents must advocate for themselves by getting educated. Testing information, to discuss with your doctor, in Toxic Staple (Chapter 16 and 17) will very likely help you and your doctor detect sensitivity to gluten if it exists.

The one blood test generally offered is too often not enough testing unless you have full-blown celiac disease or are close to the end of the road. It seems few doctors are aware of adequate blood testing or the cutting-edge sensitive stool test that saved my family. It’s not their fault as very little is being offered to educate our doctors. And sickness prevails!

Please do not ignore chronic symptoms in your child or yourself! If negative on blood testing please pursue the very sensitive stool testing.

 

Thanks at Thanksgiving…and All Year

As we approach this Thanksgiving Day and holiday season many of us think a little more about giving thanks for all that we cherish: our family and friends, our freedom, and our good health, among many others. I especially am thankful everyday for the excellent health my family and I enjoy. Had we not discovered we were all quite intolerant to gluten we would not have been such happy campers these last 12 years.

Knowing what I know about the devastating and degenerative hazards of gluten from having poured a decade into research and writing my award-winning book, “Toxic Staple” I can’t imagine what shape my family and I would be in if we hadn’t figured this monster out. I am fortunate to only be on one med for a hypothyroid that was very likely damaged due to gluten (autoimmune diseases are highly linked to gluten) before I even knew what gluten was, and I never get sick, and have great energy.

Many of you, however, do not bask in the sunlight of good health and great energy and may not realize that much of your poor state of health lies in your own hands. Most of you really can do something about your allergies, asthma, fatigue, autoimmune diseases, skin issues, neurological maladies, and on and on, if you want to. Naturally everything is not linked to gluten, but truly, it is incredible what gets better when you address this “toxic staple” that pervades our everyday lives and destroys your gut and other parts of the body.

Going downhill at the rate I was traveling prior to “the gluten-free lifestyle” in my early sixties, I can only assume that my longevity has been extended vastly, along with greater health, and rejuvenated energy and vitality.

I encourage you to look at your health and that of your children and other family members and friends. Many of you think it is normal to have intestinal issues, fatigue, allergies, asthma, arthritis, organ issues, migraines, depression, and on and on for more than over 300 maladies linked to gluten, but it is not. Older age does not necessarily have to mean degenerative, failing health. Your health and life can become so much more enhanced and transformed that you would not believe it. I am in better shape in my seventies than when I was in my forties. No kidding! All I did was remove the “monster” gluten (dairy also bothers many who are gluten intolerant). By the end of the first year I was only going for health checkups instead of sick calls.

But let me warn you that the vast majority of our traditionally trained doctors are not giving enough testing to track down celiac disease or gluten intolerance, nor are they aware of the numerous symptoms and illnesses linked to gluten. It’s not really their fault. Little is being done to educate every health care professional in every facet of medicine, since gluten can affect any part of the body, and many think celiac and gluten issues are rare. They are epidemic!

If you are plagued with chronic symptoms and illness please…do your body and brain a favor… you must become your own advocate in conjunction with your doctor. Get educated, get tested (you will need to request certain tests), and if positive follow a 100% gluten-free lifestyle. No cheating!

I have to admit Halloween has never been a favorite holiday of mine, but I was prompted to write this jingle for a local poetry group I’ve been trying to attend.

Trickster or Treat

It is a devilish trickster
In everything you know
From white flour in cupcakes
To wheat flour pizza dough

It plays with your health
In insidious ways
It can lead to cancer
And shorten your days

Neuro issues quite linked
To celiac disease
Detect if you have it
Get some expertise

Part of its schtick
Is autoimmune disease
It devastates your body
With seemingly great ease

Type 1 diabetes
Is associated you know
All should be tested
Before diseases overthrow

Over 80 autoimmune
Oh, you didn’t know
From thyroid, blood, and liver
To MS and cardio

A few symptoms
You might recognize
Reflux, fatigue, and headaches

Little is being extended in the way of conferences for health care professionals in all facets of medicine, and certainly not enough testing info is offered unless you have full-blown celiac disease and do test positive.  Too many folks test negative and told they don’t have a problem with gluten when in reality they are gluten intolerant.

Scenario 2: Arthritis, Weight Gain, Skin Lesions, Iron Deficiency, and Not Enough Testing

These scenarios all took place within about ½ hr. on Oct. 3rd on a trip to the grocery store. I expect each is connected to gluten.

Today I met B. in the parking lot and hadn’t seen her for a while so I went over to say hello. She was having a time getting out of the car, but was still driving and using a cane. She mentioned she had arthritis and was doing the GF diet, but cheats “once in a while.” Her disabling arthritis is somewhat better….she explained. “I wouldn’t even be able to walk if I weren’t on the diet,” she exclaimed. I wondered how much better she might feel if she didn’t cheat and tried to stress being 100% GF.

I received news about several people struggling with arthritis that read my book and took it seriously by doing the GF diet. Their arthritis was 95% better. Arthritis is an autoimmune disease and autoimmune diseases are highly linked to gluten. It is important to know if you are intolerant to gluten or have celiac disease; seeing it in black and white will really help you stay on the diet.

I also met a young man whose girlfriend tested negative for celiac disease. She endured intestinal issues and was told she needed to do the “low fodmap” diet…which “eliminates just about everything,” he said. He thought she only had the tTG and wasn’t tested for gluten intolerance. He was very appreciative of my info and was going to pass it on.

Ten minutes later I overheard two women talking about weight lose. I excused myself for butting in and mentioned that often people who have celiac disease lose 10-12 lbs.…even 30-40 lbs. without trying once they remove the toxic staple. They were both very interested in my topic and glad I shared my card with them. One woman mentioned she was taking iron pills. I asked if her doctor ever questioned why she needed iron or did s/he offer to test for celiac. No! That’s why I wrote my book. She wanted to know where to get the book and was most interested. Hoping she’ll get back to me with a success story.

As I was pulling out of the parking lot I noticed a woman intrigued by my number plate, XGLUTEN, so I rolled the window down for a chat. She was off sugar and gluten. Her doctor said her psoriasis and actinic keratosis, precancerous skin lesions, were better than he’d seen in 10 years. And she lost 5-6 lbs.

Skin issues can signify an unhealthy body. Numerous multisyllabic skin diseases that can respond to a gluten-free lifestyle are mentioned in Chapter 11: The Skin You’re In. Dairy is often another protein linked to skin issues.

Whether you have arthritis, excess weight, iron deficiency, intestinal issues, or skin lesions, you may very well have celiac disease or be somewhere on the continuum of intolerance to gluten. Unfortunately, too often, not enough testing is being offered to track it down and the patient is told they don’t have a problem with gluten.
